Port Meadow

Last weekend, we visited Port Meadow, a large area of common land next to the River Thames (known as the Isis at this point). The meadow, an ancient grazing land given to the freemen of Oxford by Alfred the Great, is still used for horses and cattle and has never been ploughed.

This is where the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) rowed up the river with a friend and three young girls — Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell. Dodgson made up a story at the girls' request which was later expanded into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

On our journey, we crossed bridges on bicycle.

We followed the sign to the Perch Inn.

At the Inn, we sat at a picnic table and were refreshed by lemonade.

And, finally, we interacted with some of the grazers before heading home.
